The Art of Staying: Awakening in Istanbul at The Bank Hotel
Some hotels are remembered for their interiors. Others for the view. And then there are those rare places that slip quietly into an artist’s story – becoming, for a moment, part of the work itself.
For Piano Revenge, The Bank Hotel Istanbul became exactly that.
This summer, Anna Bondareva, Artistic Director and Founder of Piano Revenge Festival, arrived in Istanbul to record her new piano album, Awakening in Istanbul : 15 compositions (album release date 22nd of August), soon to be released. For several days, the hotel’s elegant salon was transformed into a private recording studio, where piano, architecture, light and silence became unexpected collaborators.
It is difficult to imagine a more fitting setting for an album inspired by Istanbul. Housed in the former headquarters of the Crédit Général Ottoman, The Bank Hotel carries its history with an effortless sense of style, balancing historic architecture with contemporary design and the unmistakable creative pulse of Karaköy.
Between recording sessions came the pleasures of the city and the hotel itself: long evenings on the terraces, the rooftop at sunset, quiet nights in the suite and moments of restoration at the spa. The experience moved naturally between intense artistic focus and the kind of considered hospitality that allows creativity to breathe.

“The album was not simply recorded in Istanbul. It was lived there.”
For Piano Revenge, this collaboration speaks to something essential: our belief that music belongs not only on the stage, but wherever people, places and ideas come together. And The Bank Hotel – with its history, atmosphere and openness to artistic life – proved an especially beautiful setting for that encounter.
As Awakening in Istanbul prepares to enter the world, we turn the spotlight towards the hotel itself. What makes a historic building feel alive? Why are artists drawn to places with character? And how can hospitality become part of a creative dialogue?
In the following conversation, The Bank Hotel Istanbul opens its doors a little wider – revealing the philosophy, history and creative spirit behind one of Istanbul’s most distinctive addresses.
A place where the past has impeccable taste, the present feels effortlessly alive, and the next story is always waiting to be written.

PRM: “The Bank Hotel Istanbul is housed within one of the city’s most remarkable historic buildings, once at the heart of Istanbul’s financial district. Could you tell us the story behind the building’s transformation into a luxury boutique hotel, and how its heritage continues to shape the guest experience today?”
The Bank Hotel Istanbul is located in the former headquarters of the Crédit Général Ottoman, a building that played an important role in the financial history of the city. Rather than simply preserving a historic façade, the transformation focused on respecting the building’s original character while creating a contemporary luxury experience.
Many of the original architectural details, such as the marble columns, high ceilings and the former bank vault, have been carefully preserved and integrated into the hotel’s identity. For our guests, staying at The Bank Hotel is not only about comfort but also about experiencing a piece of Istanbul’s history in a way that feels authentic and alive.
PRM: “Art seems to be woven into the very identity of The Bank Hotel. How has the hotel developed its relationship with contemporary art, music, and cultural initiatives, and why is supporting artistic expression an important part of your philosophy?”
Art has always been a natural extension of our identity. Being located in Karaköy, one of Istanbul’s most creative neighborhoods, allows us to be surrounded by galleries, museums, independent artists and cultural institutions.
Over the years, we have collaborated with artists, designers and cultural organizations through exhibitions, installations, performances and creative events. We believe that hospitality is about creating meaningful experiences, and art has the power to connect people with both the destination and each other in a memorable way.

PRM: “Throughout the years, The Bank Hotel has welcomed artists, musicians, and creative minds from around the world. What makes the hotel such an inspiring place for artistic creation, and do you have any memorable collaborations that particularly reflect its creative spirit?”
Creative people are naturally drawn to places with character, and we believe The Bank Hotel offers exactly that. The combination of historic architecture, contemporary design and the vibrant atmosphere of Karaköy creates an inspiring environment where ideas can flourish.
We have had the pleasure of welcoming numerous artists, musicians, photographers and designers over the years. Every collaboration has been unique, but they all share one common element: they become part of the evolving story of the building rather than simply using it as a backdrop.
PRM: “This year, internationally acclaimed pianist Anna Bondareva, Artistic Director and Founder of the Piano Revenge Festival Paris, chose The Bank Hotel Istanbul as the location to record her new album. What did this collaboration represent for the hotel, and how do you see music enriching the narrative of this extraordinary historical space?”
Hosting Anna Bondareva for the recording of her new album was a very special moment for us. It demonstrated that The Bank Hotel can be more than a place to stay – it can also become part of the creative process itself. We are proud that the hotel became part of an artistic work that will continue to reach audiences long after the recording itself.
Additionally, music brings a unique emotional dimension to historic spaces. The atmosphere, acoustics and architectural character of the building contribute to an experience that cannot easily be recreated elsewhere. We hope this collaboration will inspire many more artistic projects in the future.

PRM: “The Bank Hotel has recently received the prestigious One MICHELIN Key, recognizing exceptional hospitality and guest experience. What does this distinction mean for your team, and how does it reflect the values and standards that define the hotel today?”
Receiving One MICHELIN Key is a meaningful recognition for our entire team. It reflects our commitment to offering not only exceptional service, but also a distinctive sense of place and authentic hospitality.
We believe luxury today is defined by thoughtful details, genuine connections and memorable experiences rather than extravagance alone. This recognition reinforces our commitment to maintaining those standards while continuing to evolve.
PRM: “Istanbul has always been a crossroads of civilizations, cultures, and artistic influences. In what ways does The Bank Hotel embody this unique spirit, and how do you introduce international guests to the city’s rich cultural heritage through your experiences and partnerships?”
Few cities in the world combine history, culture and contemporary life as naturally as Istanbul. The Bank Hotel reflects that same balance by bringing together heritage, modern design and local experiences under one roof.
Our location in Karaköy allows guests to explore neighborhoods such as Galata, Beyoğlu and the Historic Peninsula on foot, while our team enjoys introducing visitors to local restaurants, galleries, artisan workshops and cultural events that reveal a more authentic side of the city.
PRM: “Looking ahead, what is your vision for the future of The Bank Hotel Istanbul? Are there new artistic collaborations, cultural projects, or international initiatives that you are particularly excited to develop in the coming years-especially in dialogue with institutions and festivals such as Piano Revenge?”
Our vision is to continue strengthening The Bank Hotel’s position as one of Istanbul’s leading lifestyle and cultural hotels.
We look forward to developing new collaborations with artists, musicians, designers and international cultural institutions while creating experiences that go beyond traditional hospitality. Partnerships such as the one with Piano Revenge demonstrate how meaningful cultural collaborations can enrich both the guest experience and the identity of the hotel. We hope to build on these relationships and continue creating projects that celebrate creativity, heritage and the unique spirit of Istanbul.
